Types of LCD and Display Screens
LCD is short for liquid crystal display, different types of LCD have different functions which we are going to introduce briefly.
1. TN LCD:
The pattern or text of this type of LCD is fixed, which will not change. Such TN LCD is mainly used on home appliances, digital products, such as calculator, electricity meter, water meter etc. which do not need complicated monitor function.
2. COG:
COG module is a higher version of LCD, which allows any digital output as long as it is written by the IC. It will display content automatically. It has many advantages, including easy installation. COG module does not need to be welded, and can be simply connected by plugging FPC connector. Its’ use life is long and function stable. Many high-end industrial control equipment and device use COD module to display. Its only disadvantage is that it takes long time to develop as it needs to be customized and the moulding fee is quite expensive. But there is also common ready sizes such as 3 inches, 4 inches and 4.5 inches to choose.
3. TFT:
TFT LCD is Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display, it can display any color and any patterns.The most common seen TFT display is smart phones, pads, and laptops and computer monitors, and so on. It can display very clearly and rich of functions. TFT LCD has always enjoy large bulk orders as its cost is very reasonable while its replace period is short, about one to two years.
4. OLED:
Organic Light-Emitting Diode or Organic Electroluminesence Display is the most popular new display, which has almost gathered all advantages of other LCD types. High-end smart phones such as Sam-Sang G30, HUAWEI Mate 30 all use OLED display. But as it needs precision and very strict production rules, the cost of producing it is still quite high. Currently, only a few factories are able to produce it in bulk quantity, such as Sam Sang in Korea, TSMC in Taiwan province if China, and BOE in China mainland.
Above are only a few types of LCD displays, LCD has become the main display device in the past decades. But as technology has been and is still in rapid development, we believe that soon we will reach another high level.
